Types of Non-Destructive Testing

The tensile-strength test is within itself destructive; during the process of fostering research, the sample is obliterated. Internal, like external imperfections, can be detected with X-ray or gamma-ray machines in which the radiation scans the object and impresses on an appropriate photographic film. On some occasions, it can be possible to target the X rays to a significant section in the sample, allowing a 3D description of the flaw geometry along with its position.

Sound

Ultrasonic inspection of parts takes transmission of sound waves above human hearing range through the sample. In the reflection technique, a sound wave is transmitted over one end of the piece, reflected off the far end, then returned into a receiver that is located at the beginning area. When impinging on a break or imperfection in the piece, the signal is reflected and its transmission altered. The actual delay becomes a signal of the location of the flaw; a map of the material can then be made to isolate the point and dimensions of the weaknesses. Magnetism
